An expat who has lived in Benidorm for over 20 years revealed why it will be “absolute chaos and madness” for visitors in March. Lucy Young, also known as the Benidorm Enthusiast, explained that two events in particular would cause “all hell to break loose” in the popular Spanish resort loved by British and Irish tourists.
The content creator said that it was “one of the biggest months of the year” because it was when “most people regard here as the turning point in the season when it goes from relaxed and chilled winter vibes to absolute madness and complete Benidorm style chaos in just a few days”.
Before getting into it, she quickly explained that Benidorm had seen a “fantastic run of weather” from the middle of February onwards. She added: “The winter overall was pretty dreary — it was very wet, it was cold, it was grey. It was definitely one of the worst winters I’ve ever had since living here 20 years. But that did seem to turn around in the middle of Feb and if this sort of weather continues into March, we are in for a treat.”

Cheltenham
The Cheltenham Festival takes place from March 10 until March 13 and Lucy explained why it has become such a big deal in Benidorm. She stated: “It is the week many of you have been waiting for where we’re going to see all hell break loose in Benidorm!”
Lucy added that it was “easily” one of the busiest weeks in the calendar year for British and Irish bars on the strip that will be packed with punters. She said Chelentham in Benidorm started out as a few people watching the races on the big screen while enjoying cheap drinks in the sun.
However, she said it now has a “cult-like following” in the town and that it is “absolute madness and it just gets bigger every year”. She added: “There is tens of thousands of British and Irish that will descend upon us here in Benidorm to get some bets on and to watch the racing here in our bars.
“You can probably do the four days here in Benidorm with flights, accommodation and booze spends for what it costs you to attend one day at the actual Cheltenham Festival. And you’ve got a much better chance of some good weather here — it’s a no-brainer for many.”
St Patrick’s Day
Unsurprisingly, Benidorm will paint the town green for St Patrick’s Day on March 17, and like Cheltenham, it is also one of the biggest events of the year. Lucy said it has grown in popularity in recent years and that it has gone to “another level completely” since Covid.
She said there are plans to push it to make it even bigger in the coming years and that the celebrations will spread throughout the whole of Benidorm as opposed to just on the strip.
The expat added: “It’s going to grow and be an absolutely massive party that takes over the whole of Benidorm and is celebrated by all the different nationalities too. In a recent meeting, we spoke about making Benidorm’s St Patrick’s Day party one of the biggest Paddy’s Day parties outside of Ireland in the world over the next five years.
“And we’ve got a few different plans put into motion to make this happen. The first of which is happening this year, so if you are coming over for the St Patrick’s Day this year in Benidorm, you’ve chosen a good one because this year is going to be the start of something very very special.”
After posting the video, which you can watch here, one person replied: “Remember last March well. St Patricks day it rained all day. But it’s was brilliant all the same.” Another said: “I’m flying over from Melbourne Australia for the Cheltenham and St Patrick’s day.”
